The
GeodSoft
web site provides tips on designing and building web sites for associations and
small business. It includes tutorials on
and case studies:
- Making This Site: A study of the
problems encountered building mirrored sites on Linux, Windows NT and
OpenBSD.
- A Large Association Web Site: A review
of key problems and projects building a third generation web site tightly
integrating the member data with granular security, list servers, and
document sharing.
There was also a Sample Site, a working model of
a design for a large association site combining what had previously been
independent web sites.
What's New
has an up-to-date summary of recent changes. The
Style Sheet area was recently completed but
the Book section is still to come. The rest of the site
is "finished" or more accurately up-to-date and not obviously missing content
as no web site is ever finished (unless it's closing). Feedback would be
appreciated.
For some time my main focus had been on the Making
This Site part of
About GeodSoft
and I recently wrapped up the
first pass at the Large Web Project also
in the About GeodSoft Section. The Making This Site section starts
with a capsule summary of the current state of the site. It explains
why after planing to do the site on NT and
IIS first, the Red Hat Linux site is now the "primary" site.
This section continues to grow as I add new features to the site
or encounter new management issues that need to be dealt with.
After the DSL line was installed, firewalls, intrusion detection systems and the
whole array of issues related to trying to secure computers that are
continuously connected to the Internet and deliberately available to
the public in some form consumed all my time. I hope to do a section
on connecting small business LANs to the Internet.
Now that I've finally done the Style Sheet
section I will be turning
my attention to the book section. Besides continuing to work on security
issues I've returned to writing and editing parts of the book but don't
feel that any of it is quite ready for public exposure.
Later a user response form or interactive forum for user responses
and reactions to ideas expressed here is a possibility. A
database to hold this information plus visitor information voluntarily
provided with such responses or comments is planned. At that time I will
appropriately revise the privacy policy.
At some point, unless security becomes a primary long term focus,
I hope to return to my
XML and Java explorations and that XML will provide an automated
method for keeping web and print versions of the book in sync.
